George Bernard Shaw’s

Pygmalian

June 2025 | Backlit on Bonna

Before My Fair Lady there was Pygmalian, the stage play that inspired it all…

Pygmalian tells the story of a flower sales girl, Eliza Doolittle, a young woman born to poverty and Henry Higgins, a pompous professor of linguistics who’s far too proud of his own brilliance. Higgins bets he can pass Eliza off as a proper lady of high society — just by “fixing” the way she speaks. After all — he’s an expert — what could possibly go wrong?

What begins as a lesson in language quickly becomes a battle of wit and will, as Eliza shows Higgins (and maybe even herself) that she’s far more than anyone expected.

Directed by Katherine Gibson and Assistant Director, Kelly Melcho

Director’s Note:

When I first read Pygmalion, I was drawn to the character of Eliza Doolittle, and her dreams of something more than selling flowers on the street corner. Her journey from flower girl to genteel lady is one of hard work, determination, and spirit. Henry Higgins takes on the challenge of helping transform the flower girl into a fancy lady as a bet, but later finds out that he has been changed by her as well. I have immensely enjoyed the process of this production, from discovering some wonderful talent at auditions, to nurturing the development of the characters, and seeing the story unfold onstage. There are sweet moments, emotional moments, and plenty of humor in this wonderful story. I am so proud of the entire cast, and very excited for you to see them bring this show to life. Lastly, I would like to thank my wonderful husband for all his love and support, and my son for being an awesome helper. Thank you for coming to support 4th Wall Players and I hope you enjoy the show.
